In general

Good spare parts should always be used, and most of the time, original spare parts are the best. Cheap is expensive.

It is very effective to put a skid plate.

Have a battery disconnector or have a wrench on hand that allows us to remove a terminal.

We hope we have helped you with these little tips. In other emails we will tell you what we think about vehicle preparations and what should be carried in them.

Before starting the vehicle

Check levels

  • Engine oil
  • Power steering fluid
  • Radiator fluid and expansion bottle level
  • Brake fluid

Tire pressure: Inadequate tire pressure, apart from creating insecurity in the vehicle, accelerates tire wear.

Check that the batteries are properly secured, vibrations can loosen the screws and, if there is movement, they can be damaged.

Acular inspection of leaks under the car, detect any fluid leaks and repair them, avoid costly repairs

During the route

Warm up and cool down the 4X4 thoroughly, especially on diesel engines:

  • Start the activity from less to more, until the car indicators tell us that it is at optimal temperature.
  • Do not stop suddenly. If the engine is too hot, the radiator will expel liquid and lose its level. This will damage the turbo. After intense activity, it is best to keep the engine running for a few minutes and then stop.

Do not make sudden maneuvers, do not force the steering wheel, it is better to make three maneuvers than two.

Use the reduction gear whenever necessary, the clutch will thank you.

After completing a route

Clean the car of mud, especially the underbody, mud dries out all the rubber and sinenblocks.

Periodic check-ups at the mechanic

Air filter, keeping it dirty reduces power

Brakes, wearing them out damages the discs

Timing belt (120,000 kilometers or according to manufacturer)

Sinenblocks are essential elements for vehicle twisting, keeping them in good condition prevents all types of breakages.

Raise the 4×4 on a lift and have a good mechanic check for possible cracks.

Check and replace if necessary the fluid in:

  • Transfer
  • Differentials

Grease cardan shaft

Check shock absorbers

From experience my advice is that the first step in a 4×4 preparation would be to cover the underbody and snorkel, to shield our mechanics and protect it, from here some suitable tires, both mixed and studded, depending on the use, a lifting kit. A winch is interesting depending on the use, etc.”

What advice do you give to someone who wants to get into 4×4 travel?

“First of all, we recommend having a good all-terrain vehicle, at least with reduction gears and, if possible, some kind of locking system, whether electronic or mechanical. Mechanical reliability is very important, taking care of every detail and checking the vehicle before each trip. We give a lot of importance to the suspension. When the use on the track, dunes or road is intensive, in one day we see how the suspension loses effectiveness to the point that the shock absorbers can lose their function due to excessive oil temperature. We are specialists in repair and maintenance of suspensions of all brands. Of course, the more we prepare the vehicle, the better performance it will give us, lower plates, adequate height, snorkel, winch… From personal experience, going on trips is a great effort for all of us, financially, days of work… and the main thing is that our vehicle does not fail us and does not spoil what in principle should be a good vacation.”
